Blame it on the Stones! If you need a starting point for Bebe Buell's wild
ride through rock'n'roll history you need look no further. As an eleven your
old she not only attended her first Rolling Stones concert, she made the local
papers having been the first Jagger/Jones/Richard crazed fan to charge the
stage setting off near riot at, what had been, a rather sedate show. All it
takes one rebel to get the place rockin'. And Bebe, at eleven years, was a
rebel. And she still is probably always will be. That's rebel with a capitol
"R", folks!
Since that first show she hit the ground runnin' and hasn't stopped since.
First as a top model and cover-girl with the Ford Agency who would regulary
break curfew to spend countless nights hanging out at the legendary Max's
Kansas City (where John Lennon once sang "Happy Birthday"to her)
and CBGB's. And later as a Playboy Playmate and paramour to the likes of Steven
Tyler, Stiv Bator, Todd Rundgren and Elvis Costello. Then, like thousands
of others caught up in the excitment of the initial punk rock explosion, she
decided, on the advice of Patti Smith, to start making music herself.
Musically, it started when Bebe recorded a bestselling EP of some of her favorite
cover tunes for Rhino Records back in 1981 with both the Cars Ric Ocasek and
Rick Derringer producting and backing her up on such classics as Iggy pop's
"Funtime" and the Night-crawlers "Little Black Egg". More
than one writer compared her voice to "a rockin' Brenda Lee". And
that pillar of taste, Motorhead's Lemmy, says she sounds like "a teenage
boy".
More than one writer compared her voice to "a rockin' Brenda Lee".
And that pillar of taste, Motorhead's Lemmy, says she sounds like "a
teenage boy", which, we believe was meant as a big compliment.
She then set to tearin' it up onstage with her raw, passionate brand of rock'n'roll.
In the process becoming one of the top club acts in New York City and the
northeast of America. First with her band the B-Sides, then with the Gargoyles
and later and later with the all femme super-group Hellsbelles, which she
put together for some special "Rock the Vote" shows. Releasing singles
along the way and garnering a devoted international following hungry for the
psychedelic melody of the 60's, some bump 'n ' grind crunch of the early 70's
and the attitude/aggression of punk.
All sung with a voice than can go from a sultry purr to a cardiac howl in
the space of the instant. A lethal rock'n'roll combination!
In 1993 I was lucky enough to talk her into releasing a single on my new,
Ultra Under label. It brought in rave reviews and sold-out its pressing very
quickly. And more importantly, for me, allowed me the opportunity to become
friend with someone I both respect and am in awe of. Bebe is very, very cool.
So enjoy this compilation. It's real. No bullshit, no hype, no empty promises...
This is the fun stuff that is so real you can taste it!
